EagleSpeak has a very informative post regarding piracy in the Gulf of Aden. Take a look at the maps, it is impossible to avoid areas of high activity by staying away from the coast.
EagleSpeak has posted on the possibilities of using convoys to protect shipping but - It ain't going to happen. I would like to see the IMO lay down some suggested route to keep shipping closer together. The present system is every ship for itself, with individual masters trying to determine the safest route. If there was a recommended route ships would be easier to protect, plus they could assist each other, a boat approaching from astern would be just ahead of he next ship and thus more easily spotted. If pirates are spotted before they can board the watch can sound the alarm. It is much more difficult for pirates to board a ship with a crew that is alert and aware.
If you are a ship master sailing the Gulf of Aden and you are not reading EagleSpeak, you probably should be.
